MEET THE MEMBERS FIRST SLATE
Grant, a longtime Guild leader from a family steeped in labor union values, was elected president of The NewsGuild of New York in November 2016 and took office on Jan. 2, 2017. As President of the NewsGuild,Grant Glickson has had one goal: make the NewsGuild stronger by investing in you, the members. For the previous seven years, Grant chaired the Guild unit at The New York Times, where the local represents more than 1,100 employees. He has held a variety of jobs at the paper since joining the staff in 1987, most recently paginating the real estate and Sunday business sections. Read more here.
STACY COWLEY (NEW YORK TIMES)
Stacy Cowley is business reporter at The New York Times, which she joined in 2013 after working as a reporter and editor at Time Inc., CNN and various other newsrooms in New York. She is currently a member of the Times’ Guild unit council and a volunteer trustee for the Guild-Times Benefits Fund, which manages the Guild’s self-funded health care plan.
Stacy is running to help our leadership strengthen the Guild’s infrastructure and position the union to serve its growing ranks of new and veteran members.
JIM LUTTRELL (NEW YORK TIMES)
Jim Luttrell, who is currently the local’s third Vice President, has been an award-winning editor, designer and web producer in his 24 years at The New York Times, the first 22 in sports before he was moved to the print hub in 2017. In his time in sports, Jim covered two Olympic Games and was the company’s representative to APSE, where he was Northeast Region chair for four years. Prior to joining The Times, he worked at United Press International, The Staten Island Advance, The National Sports Daily and The Courier-Journal of Louisville. Jim, who grew up on Staten Island in a union household (NYC District of Carpenters and Joiners, Local 157), currently is the Grievance Chairman for the Times unit, chairs the Career Path Committee and is a trustee of the Guild-Times pension fund. He has previously served on the negotiating committee.
In 2018, Jim was honored with the Tom Keenan award, which is given to a member who has performed above and beyond in service to the New York Local and best exemplifies the ideals of a true labor leader. Luttrell was recognized for his passionate, reliable and enduring activism as someone who quickly engages new union members and tirelessly works to strengthen the unit.
Jim, a member of Toastmasters International, lives in Freehold, N.J., with his wife, Christine, three daughters and their dog, Shea.
TONY BARONE (REUTERS)
FIRST VICE PRESIDENT
Brooklyn native Tony Barone, is currently the local’s 2nd Vice President. He has worked at Thomson Reuters for 29 years in roles that include video engineer, cameraman, satellite coordinator and MCR (master control room) operator. A longtime Guild activist, Tony serves as Unit Secretary, a member of the collective bargaining team and a shop steward. He is also a multimedia artist, designer, instrumentalist and writer. In addition to Reuters, he has worked as a technical manager at Fox News and Al Jazeera. His collective experience has given him a broad understanding of media technology and the challenges we face as our industry rapidly evolves. Tony has four children and lives in New Jersey.
KAREN ROHAN (FOREIGN POLICY)
SECOND VICE PRESIDENT
Karen Rohan, the Foreign Policy Association Editor in Chief, is the longest standing EC member of our local. She’s been a member of the Newspaper Guild/NewsGuild since 1984, and was Chairperson of the Foreign Policy Association unit from 1991 until 2010, a member of the executive committee from 1995 to 2019, a member of the Finance Committee from 2001 to 2016 and Local Chair from March 2013 to December 2016.
KAZI ISLAM (HUDSON NEWS)
THIRD VICE PRESIDENT
Kazi Islam, the Hudson News Unit Chair since 2014, has worked hard to build a cohesive community among the retail and fast food workers of his sprawling Manhattan bargaining unit. Kazi won the Guild’s 2015 Keenan Award after being nominated by nearly two-thirds of his more than 300 co-workers. Kazi has participated in two sets of negotiations that produced strong contracts in behalf of his members.
